Christ Statue

Christ Statue

The idea of inserting an outsized Christian monument atop Corcovado peak in Rio dates back to the decennium, when a native Catholic priest requested funds from blue blood Isabel to make one. The princess was not overenthusiastic and therefore the set up was scrapped entirely with the commencement of the Republic of Brazil in 1889, which separated church and state.

In 1921, the Catholic Circle of Rio began to collect signatures and donations for a privately-funded Christian monument. Various styles were thought-about, including a giant cross and a sculpture of Christ holding a globe, but ultimately AN image of Christ along with his arms wide open was chosen.Construction began in 1922. The statue of Christ the Redeemer was designed by native engineer Heitor prosecuting attorney sylva Costa and carved from concrete and soap-rock by Paul Landowski, a Frenchman. After 9 years and a price of $250,000, the statue opened to the public on Discovery Day, 1931.
To celebrate Christ the Redeemer's 75th day in 2006, a chapel dedicated to the patron saint of Brazil (Nossa Senhora Aparecida) was built at the bottom. The statue was stricken by lightning in February 2008 throughout a major electric storm, but loose any harm due to the insulating properties of soap-rock.Cristo Redentor depicts Christ with his arms spread wide during a hospitable gesture, representing his role as redeemer of the world.
